Chapter 7

I thoroughly enjoyed the company off Matt over the weeks that we hung out and became closer. He became a regular guest in our crazy household, along with Phil's FINALLY moving in.  He and Amber had been together like, 5 or 6 years, and still not moved in together. It was crazy if you asked me. They were engaged, and he just NOW moved in. It was fun having Phil around. Phil and me were always good buddies, ever since he and Amber started dating. He's a good guy.  Matt was over almost as much as Phil was home. Apparently he loved hanging out in our house. What can I say, we're good, friendly people. We make everyone feel welcome in our house. Matt knocked briefly and pushed the door open. I stuck my head around the corner and waved. “Hey hey stranger.” I said smiling. He smiled in return and made his way into the great-room where I was.

“What are you doing in here Jackie?” He asked, wondering why I was sitting at our baby grand piano, knowing that I barely played it anymore.

“I was in the mood to write, so I wrote a song. It sucked though, so I've just been messing around. What are you up to?” I asked, trying to take the attention off me before he could ask me to play it. He knew what I was doing.

“Shove over. Sing me the lyrics, and I'll play.” He said. I shook my head.

“Oh no no. I'm a writer, not a singer. I don't sing. I have a voice that makes dogs cry, it's awful. I refuse to sing!” I said, smiling. He rolled his eyes.

“Whatever, just sing it for me.” He said, sitting up to play. I began to sing.

Go forth and be seen,
go take your own stand,
go be your own person,
go grow and evolve,
Whatever you do don't look back,
Don't question the path you're being shown
Go bring down the moon,
go play in the sun,
go accomplish your goals,
go and be merry,
Please don't care how long it takes
Because sooner or later you'll make it
go make dreams come true,
go fall in love,
go smell the roses,
go make stars out of darkness
I know you'll find your way somehow
You've got stars all you own

I closed my mouth quickly, and looked at Matt. He smiled and did a little half-nod, and began to play. I placed my hands on the keys, and played with him. By the end, we had created a beautiful, soulful ballad.  There was a clapping from the doorway.  I whirled around on the bench to find out who stood behind us. To my surprise there stood Isaac, and what looked like his brother Taylor. I stood quickly, as did Matt.

“Jackie, I hope you don't mind that I brought a couple of friends tonight. Jackie, this is Isaac, and Jordan aka Taylor Hanson.” He said, totally unaware Isaac and I had met.

“Nice to meet you Jordan aka Taylor. Hey Isaac.” I said his name quietly and avoided eye contact. Matt wrapped his arm around my waist as we walked from the room. We brushed past the 2 standing in the doorway.

“Call me Taylor. It's what everyone is used to. That was an awesome song. Did you write that?” Jordan asked as we moved past. I stopped to stand by him.

“Yeah, actually, I did. I'm better writer than I am a singer. I don't sing much, if at all. In the car or in the shower doesn't count.” I said laughing. “I've got a terrible voice.”

“Actually, you're voice has a lot of potential. You just need some pointers on how to use it. If you ever want some help, I'll be more than happy to help you out Jackie.” He said, then he looked at Isaac as if the realization suddenly hit him. “Isaac, isn't she the one…”

“Yeah! She's the movie producer Taylor.” He cut in quickly. Taylor eyed him strangely, a questioning look on his face. Isaac nudged him in the side, and he just smiled at me. I returned the smile and we all moved into the kitchen. Phil was cooking at the stove, and Amber was perched on the counter next to the stove eating a pear.

“Hey Matt, Hey Isaac, Hi other person.” Matt looked at her strangely. He didn't know that I, let alone Amber, knew Isaac. He didn't know about that whole shebang. My eyes bulged and Amber glanced at me, then hurriedly looked down at her pear, realizing her mistake. The evening went on as the evenings always do. Chachi, Nick, Bill, Pat, Paula, John, Alex, and Lisa showed up, along with a few other of Phil's friends. Plus a couple of Amber's old friends, and a few more of mine. By midnight we had about 30 people in the house. Alcohol was everywhere, and I was pretty drunk. Thank god Phil didn't drink, he could keep watch on the house. I was in the living room dancing with Chachi, having a good time when it happened. Matt came up and grabbed my arm.

“C'mon.” He said, pulling me away.

“Hey! What the hell are you doing? I was dancing with Chachi!” I said rather loudly, and with a drunken slur.

“Quit fighting! I don't want you dancing all over other guys.” He said, pulling me to the side of the room and backing me up against a wall. He braced both arms on the sides of my shoulders. I couldn't go anywhere.

“Dude, let me go. I wanna go back to the party.” I said, attempting to move. Matt wouldn't let me. “Matt, get off man. You don't own me.” He still didn't move. “Quit being a bitch.” I said, trying to shove him.

“I'll quit being a bitch when you quit being a whore and trying to fuck every guy here.” He hissed. I smacked him across the face. He just stared at me.

“Move god damnit!” I yelled, shoving him. Before I knew what was happening, Matt crocked me in the jaw. I fell over his arm and to the floor. Mind you, I was drunk as all hell. Next thing I knew I saw someone tackle Matt from the side and send him sprawling. It was Chachi, and he was wailing on Matt. Nick, Phil, Bill, and John pulled him off, and Taylor helped Matt up.

“What the fuck just happened?” Isaac yelled, over the now rather silent crowd. Chachi shook off everyone's hands and brushed himself off.

“That little shit just hit Jackie!” He said, moving towards him. By now I was up off the floor, and fairly sobered up. “You're lucky I didn't kill you asshole!” Chachi yelled at him.

“Chachi, quit. I'm okay.” I said, moving between them. I turned to Matt. “Get the hell out, and don't come back.” I said, throwing his jacket at him. Matt wiped his bloody lip and stormed out the door.

“Why the hell did he hit you?” Taylor asked, looking at me.

“Because I was dancing with Chachi, and he called me a slut. I pushed him to get him off of my and he knocked me.” I explained. Taylor rolled his eyes.

“Figures. Matt gets possessive, and he was going to therapy to control that and his anger, but I guess he quit.” Isaac said. “I didn't know you and Matt were an item.”

“I didn't know either, but apparently he thought we were.” I said, Chachi wrapped a protective arm around my shoulder. I leaned against him and smiled at everyone. “Let's not let this ruin the evening. Let the party continue. Someone get me a beer!” I said with a light laugh, rubbing my jaw. I could feel it turning purple already. “Chachi, you okay man?”

“Yeah, I'm cool.” He said, removing his arm from my shoulders as Isaac and Taylor approached.

“What's up guys?” I asked, drinking down the beer Taylor had handed me. Isaac handed me a small package. “What's this?”

“Open it once everyone is gone okay? We're heading out.” He said, leaving with Taylor. I set the package on the steps, and went back to join the party. Everyone left around 4am, either with their designated driver, or a cab. I headed up the stairs, Chachi behind me, grabbing my package on the way up. Chachi was staying in the room across the hall.

“G'night guys!” I called as I shut the door to my room. I opened the box and a tape fell out. I cocked my head to the side with curiosity as I looked at it. I shrugged and put it in the tape player. Seconds later the sweet strains of Indigo Girls filled my bedroom.

You can go to the East
To find your, inner hemisphere.
You say we're under the same sky babe,
You're bound to realize, Honey, it's not that clear.
I'm not your promise land
I'm not your promise one
I'm not your Land of Canaan, sweetheart,
Waiting for you under the sun.

Chorus:
I'm lonely tonight, I'm missing you now.
I'm wanting your love and you're giving it out.
I'm lonely tonight, I'm lonely tonight, I'm lonely tonight.

Well the meanings changed (for what it's worth),
It's just a senseless game.
I should think of love, but it's fear every time I hear
Your heart strain.
It's not the fallen man,
It's not the call of time,
It's just the London skyline
Telling me you're not mine.
Chorus

My blood is running dry,
My skin is, my skin is growing thin
For every time you find yourself
You lose a little bit of me, from within.
It's just a raging cycle, why can't we
Bring it all to the end of the line.
From inside this existence, sweetheart,
Time is not on my side.
Chorus

I'm not your promised land, I'm not your promised one.
I'm not your promised land, I'm not your promised one.
I'm not your Land of Canaan Sweetheart,
I'm not your Land of Canaan Sweetheart,
I'm not your Land of Canaan Sweetheart,
Waiting for you under the sun, I'm lonely tonight.

I loved that song so much. I looked into the box and saw a note in there. I opened it carefully and read the writing.

Jackie, I know things got weird, but I miss your touch,
your scent, your lips, the feel of you body against mine in
the night. I know I messed up somehow, but I need you.
I need you more than I've needed anyone. I'm sorry for
anything I did to drive you away from me. You stopped
answering my calls. I miss you so much, even if it was one
date, but that one, fleeting moment meant worlds to me. Jackie,
I know this is a lot to ask, but give me another chance. One
chance to love you, and make things right.
                                             C. Isaac Hanson
                    P.S. look out your window

I dropped the note and ran to the balcony. I flung open the French doors and sure enough, just as any wild hope I had as I read that note, there he was. “I wasn't going to give it to you.” He said softly. “When I came here tonight, and saw you with Matt, I wasn't going to give it to you. I thought you two were together. Matt told everyone how he was over here all the time, and I assumed you two were an item. It took me a good portion of the night to write that note. I couldn't get it right.  Jackie, say something.” He said, finally looking at me.
